Smiley FaceChurches have their ‘routines’ for observing Church ordinances. In the church I served some years ago, preparation for the Lord’s Supper was done by the deacons. The deacon chairman was responsible to get a team of men together for this task.

This particular year, Bill was our deacon chairman (not his real name!). He was a dear man, loved by all, and a Godly person. Bill’s 80+ years may have contributed to the fact he forgot we were planning to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. He had not prepared anything or anyone. I happened to be at the church on Saturday when he rushed in to take care of the preparations.

Communion traysTrue to form, he didn’t ask for help but I offered it. We gathered everyting and laid it out on the stainless steel food service island in our Church kitchen. We prepared the bread trays and filled the cups and enjoyed chatting while we worked.

There were just a few cups left when my juice bottle ran out. Bill assured me he would finish filling them and urged me go ahead and leave. He would store everything in our large, commercial refrigerator for services the next day.

Communion Surprise

I didn’t give things too much thought as I entered the Church early on Sunday morning. I was usually alone in the building at that time. But as I walked through the parlor area I heard someone in the kitchen. I investigated.

To my surprise I saw Bill. He was in a panic. He was explaining the problem to me when the microwave oven suddenly dinged and Bill spun around to open the door. He  immediately pulled out a plate holding about a dozen Communion cups. He was thawing them!

When he left the day before, he had inadvertentlyCommunion sicles placed all the Communion trays in the commercial size freezer (identical in appearance to the refrigerator).

That was the first (and last) time I nearly had Communion-sicles on Sunday morning! And this proves you can’t make up stuff funnier than things that really happen in most unexpected ways.

Soli Deo Gloria!
