Thoughts for Memorial Day

Memorial Day 2015

It’s hard to get past things that sound cliche. They are not, but they are spoken so often we stop hearing.

  • Freedom isn’t free
  • Many gave some, some gave all
  • We will never forget

We need to say these things and many more. But on Memorial Day, we just need to pause while we repeat them and reflect on the truths these sayings hold.

Freedom Has Purpose

In Galatians 5, Paul writes Christians are set free for freedom’s purposes. He cautions us not to use our freedom as a license to sin. Our society seems to have no memory of that caution. There is rampant pursuit of every kind of evil. As Scripture says, the people have cast off all restraint.
I hope your Memorial Day celebration includes a prayer of thanksgiving for those who gave their lives to secure our freedoms. I hope it includes a prayer for the safety of those who are still on duty. And I hope it also includes a prayer of repentance for the misuse of our God-given freedoms. If you want a good model for that kind of prayer, see Daniel 9.

Soli Deo Gloria!
