The Question That Answers Prayer

by | Apr 8, 2025 | Blog Page | 3 comments

The question that answers prayer is fairly simple. In fact, it’s obvious enough that we often fail to see it. But first, let’s look at the wisdom of good questions. Somewhere, I ran across the following quote:

Cleverness is seen in answers; Wisdom in questions

Prayer pointsWe cannot reach good conclusions without asking good questions. And which of us hasn’t had difficulties and challenges? Every one of them generates questions. And help comes in many forms:

  • Counsel from the Word
  • Counsel from friends
  • Prayer with others
  • Prayer alone
  • Encouragement
  • Proper questions
Prayer - asking, seeking, knocking

Ask – Seek – Knock (Jesus)

Prayer is asking for God’s answers. He answers prayer and this ministry is testimony to that fact. And sometimes His answers come in the form of Godly counsel. Proverbs tells us:

There is wisdom in many counselors.

Most of you have found that to be true in your own prayer life and with your own questions.

Prayer: Driven By Our Questions

I have been blessed with a wife and Christian friends who can help me ask the right questions. That’s incredibly valuable because we often suffer from asking the wrong questions. To quote a favorite movie, That, detective, is the right question! Another great example is a woman who described her own website as:

A collection of answers people don’t want to hear to questions they didn’t ask.

Unfortunately, I’ve had similar thoughts about preaching and writing. Sillt, a devotional blog is just one part of this ministry. And feedback is extremely encouraging. But anything worth doing is worth doing better. That’s where YOU come in. I want to give you the opportunity to start the discussion, not just respond to what is written by me or guest writers.

Questions are not limited to a small group of people. People of all walks of life have questions:

  • Husbands have questions
  • Wives have questions
  • Parents have questions
  • Students have questions
  • Teachers have questions
  • Doctors have questions
  • Retirees have questions
  • Pastors have questions
  • Bible study leaders have questions

Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers – Voltaire

Prayer - man and womanThe list above could be longer, but it makes my point. The list of questions offered in prayer are even more numerous. People want to know what the Word says about:

  • Money
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Heaven
  • Church
  • Ministry
  • Daily living
  • Hell
  • Raising children

My goal here is to encourage readers to request a post on a subject of their choice. And that gives us the opportunity to offer Biblical counsel. God’s Word is the light we all need in any situation. I also know one reader’s question could help with another reader’s prayer. God does work in mysterious ways!

There are two distinct possibilities for future posts. 1) I am answering questions that nobody is asking. But many years in ministry indicate that very unlikely. 2) I am answering questions that people should be asking, but aren’t. So I’ll add one more thing and then get back to my opening statement. The only bad questions are the ones unasked. I’ll adapt Scripture just a bit and say: There is wisdom in many questioners (counselors). So it just might be that YOUR question will be the tool that ministers to a brother or sister you don’t know. Our Father does things like that!

I’d like to encourage you to post your questions and/or comments in the comments section at the bottom of this or any other post. And since I know many of you will take this option anyway, you can also send an email to keith@e-quipus.org. Good questions can reach hearts you may never see.

Prayer and Questions

What questions do YOU have?

Now, what question answers prayer? I challenge you to ask this of the Lord:

What prayer do You want to answer about (your specific circumstance)? Please help me pray that prayer!

How do we know that will work? James 1:5 tells us this:

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Asking for that bit of wisdom means giving up on asking for what I want. Our Father, in His divine and infinite goodness, answers in the best possible ways. So, maybe we should just start by asking what prayer He wants to answer.
