It’s a birthday, let’s celebrate! The who and the how many may surprise you. But first, commemorating life events is helpful in many ways. A birthday celebrates God’s gift of life. Anniversaries remind us of His other gifts like our spouse or the work He has given us to do. Living well requires gratitude for all the gifts we’ve been given. And that’s just one reason to party!
A Birthday – Let’s Celebrate Him!
September 2019 was a busy month. God was at work and we were at work. In the second week of September (2019) we were putting the finishing touches on the legal documents that allowed us to form EquipUs. And it was five years ago next week that those documents were filed with the County and the State. That was the birth of EquipUs and it is proper to look back and be thankful!
We’ve prayed, worked and traveled. The Lord brought new laborers as well as new opportunities. And we have lived the truth of Scripture: we make our plans but the Lord directs our steps (see Proverbs 16:9). Many times I’ve reminded fellow believers that faith is a journey, not a destination. The Apostle Paul told us that Jesus’ disciples live from faith to faith (Romans 1:17). And faith is always exercised in the present. But it’s when we look back that we see His responses to our steps of faith. He truly is the God Who never fails!
A Birthday – Let’s Celebrate YOU!
There are a handful of short, memorable maxims that guide our work. Of course, they’re all based on Scripture. The one repeated most often is this:
God’s mission is people; God’s method is people!
God employs and equips people to reach people. The Word tells us that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (II Peter 3:9). Here’s how that helps us focus… The tasks in mission work are never the mission. Those tasks are the tools. And tools help us reach people – the real mission. That’s true whether we are on the mission field or the community your local church serves. People have a tendency to forget that.
Why say all that? Well, these last five years as EquipUs wouldn’t have been possible if so many helping hands had not responded in faith. As noted in God’s Army Of The Ordinary, hundreds of ordinary people have donated, equipped, prayed and traveled. And it’s proper to look back and celebrate that as well.
A Season To Celebrate
You may remember the Barbara Streisand lyric: Memories light the corners of my mind… And over the next 3 weeks or so I’d like to share some EquipUs memories! It’s a way to remember and celebrate the Father, you, the work and to look back and see how faithful our Father has been. But the challenge in doing that is: our work continues. And that’s good. So please allow me to share a word about that!
Many of you know that the work we do reaches back more than 5 years. But it’s only been done under the EquipUs “hat” since 2019. You have prayed for, and contributed to, many mission projects over all these years. That said, we have a unique set of circumstances facing us this Fall.
In just three weeks we will have a team on the ground in Belize. While the team has multiple projects, TWO of them are church buildings in need of a roof. I’ll post some pictures of the progress as part of our birthday celebration. But we are also working hard to raise the funds to complete these two churches. And just for transparency, our November team also has a church building project in the Dominican Rep. (Batey 8).
All of that means we are facing our biggest opportunity to date. What opportunity? To see how God provides the $20,000.00 for the work that needs to be done. Please pray and we will have a great time working and celebrating!
Soli Deo Gloria!
YOUR INVITATION: Every party needs a crowd. And we’d like as many as possible to celebrate our birthday and God’s great work with us. But think about your child’s birthday and how you celebrate it. If you go out for pizza you will see strangers in the restaurant. But you, your family and your friends have a table all to yourselves. Similarly, much of our celebration will be a ‘family’ affair. And we are always inviting others to join us. Anyone can do that HERE or through the Subscription link (right).
