Beautiful Beyond Description: Why You Should Try Anyway

Everything is beautiful in its own way…There are none so blind as those who will not see.  Those lyrics are from Ray Stevens’ hit, Everything Is Beautiful. But one statement is true while the other is false. And what Stevens said about seeing is also true of hearing. But whether we are looking or listening, there is an eternal message being communicated. The question is: What will we do about it?

Beautiful Beyond Description

Mark Altrogge gave us the worship song, I Stand In Awe Of You. It’s one of my favorites. His opening line addresses God this way:

You are beautiful beyond description too marvelous for words…

EquipUs logoContrary to the Ray Stevens lyric, everything is not beautiful. There is evil in this world. It is often beyond our descriptive abilities. Just know that ultimate beauty does exist and He is indescribable. But is there a value in trying to do so? There is. And we have examples to prove that and to help us in our understanding! And isn’t that the goal of Scripture? We look into it and learn of Christ.

Beautiful Description: Anonymous

BeautifulLet me direct your attention to another author. We can only speculate about his identity. His ‘lyric’ is the book of Hebrews. This author had obviously beheld the glory and majesty of Christ until he could contain himself no longer. He didn’t begin softly and build to a thunderous crescendo. He started at the climax and proclaimed the greatness of the One he beheld. Notice:

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high; having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

God has been speaking to Man since Adam, Eve, and the Garden of Eden. He spoke long ago. He spoke to those who came before us. And Scripture shows us the benefit of His speaking into their lives. Many of them wrote about hearing the voice of God. Psalm 50:1 is one example:

The mighty God, even the Lord, has spoken…

Subscribe hereGenesis begins with the focused phrase, In the beginning God… God spoke and all that is came into being! The Apostle Peter wrote:

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The writer of Hebrews makes it clear that GOD is the One speaking. And He still speaks!

Beautiful In Variety

The voice of God is not monotone. His Word is woven throughout history. And the universe gives witness to the power and majesty of His speech:

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day unto day utters speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

The very stars in the night sky are placed there to communicate to you the majesty of your Beloved One.  And not only did He do all these things to reveal Himself and His love to you, He came in person.  God, the great I AM, has revealed Himself and spoken to us in His Son, Jesus Christ.
BeautifulHow incredible that is! Let me attempt to put it in perspective.

Do you remember walking into your yard and seeing little yellow dandelions that weren’t there the day before. In a day or two, they are gone. Now, I want you to think back to the first dandelion you saw in your yard in April of 1997. Can’t do it?  Check out Psalm 90. Our life is like that dandelion. In terms of eternity, we are here today and gone tomorrow.

Beauty In Purpose

Not only does God recall each one, He names us all (see Ephesians 3) and He wants a relationship with every one of us (it’s not His will that any should perish). beautifulGod is speaking so we may hear Him. He is creating so we may see His handiwork and be drawn to Him. This One above all others has invited everyone into a loving relationship with Himself and others. But there’s more!

His beauty is extended to all who will believe. We will be like Him. His Word tells us we are clothed in the beauty of His righteousness. But until we see Him face to face we have been given the ministry of reconciliation. We get to carry the beautiful news of His love and forgiveness. And that is not just a to do item. As we can see from the writer of Hebrews, it’s also a to declare item! And just to underscore the point:

How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”

P.S. – What worth that bestows on YOU. You are surely not worthy on your own merits because you don’t have any!  BUT, He makes you worthy because of Who He is and what He has done! That is truly beautiful!
