But the Servants Knew

John 2:11 makes it clear that Jesus transformed water into wine to reveal His glory. His power to perform miracles is not surprising. It is a little surprising that He did this without any fanfare. There was no,

trumpet fanfareHey, ya’ll, watch this!

Two things happened. He gave instructions and the servants obeyed. We are not even given the exact moment it occurred. Following His directions, they filled the water pots, drew out a cupful and served it to the chief servant. At some point between the time it was poured into the pots and the time it touched his lips it became wine.

The chief servant, not knowing what had happened, praised the bridegroom, assuming he had simply saved the best for last. But the servants knew. When they saw the chief servant’s delight, I imagine they turned in amazement to look at Jesus. I wonder if He gave them a wink of the eye. What is certain, however, is that they knew. And they knew because their obedience allowed them to be part of the work of God. They beheld His glory!

YOU are in the Story!

It is important to note that in John’s account of the Gospel, the glory of Christ was first revealed to servants (all of us are servants!). Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever, is still doing the miraculous work of transformation today. He transforms lives like yours and mine. He uses servants like you and me to accomplish that task.

As He works in us, so He can work through us. And as He does that, we behold His glory!

One final bite to chew on… While the chief servant assumed the bridegroom in Cana had saved the best for last, we’re promised that not even a cup of cold water given in His name will go unrewarded. We serve the One who said,

I am coming quickly and My reward is with Me.

For those who are faithful in serving Christ, the best is yet to come! Need more proof? Try Psalm 16:11,

You will show me the path of life. In Your presence there is fullness of joy. At Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore. ~ Selah
